Abstract

This study is conducted out of the writer's curiosity after noticing a great number of significant errors both in vocabulary and grammar in the English workbook of junior high school students in Surabaya. They are worth studying because they appear in a workbook used by many students at prominent schools, i.e., SMPN 1 and SMPN 6 Surabaya. These errors will certainly hinder the process of learning the L2. Hence, the writer is encouraged to find out what kinds of errors are committed by the workbook writers. In conducting her study she follows several major steps; namely, determining the workbook, searching the errors by reading each sentence in that workbook, classifying them in terms of Fauziati's framework and analyzing them to know the frequency of occurrence of each error. Based on this, the writer makes an attempt to interpret them. After the data are analyzed, the writer gets the following findings: The vocabulary error consists of five groups of errors, of which the mismatch of lexical system is the most frequent (7.52%). Grammatical error, on the other hand, comprises ten groups of errors. In this category, preposition get the highest percentage (18.58%), followed by miscellaneous errors (15.93%) and article (14.60%).
