Abstract

This study concerns with the favoured motivations of the students in learning English. The writer identified the favoured motivations of the students when they are learning English during their last year in high school, Furthermore, the writer also classified the integrative motivation and instrumental motivation along with the achievement in the final term tests of the students. In the process of data collection, the writer used questionnaires to learn about the favoured motivations and found out the achievement tests of the students from the teachers. To complete the data, the writer also conducted interviews with the respondents. After analyzing the data, the writer learned that the students favoured instrumental motivation better than integrative motivation with the reasons that English helps to acquire a good job and develops career. The achievements from the final term tests also showed that the students who are instrumentally motivated have better scores. However, the writer then discovered that some of the students who have significant integrative motivation tend to join English courses, unlike those who have higher instrumental motivation that prefer courses that train tests.
