Abstract

Costello is a marginal character, but, she could have been a very powerful one. She has a great emotional power, her lecture is in various topics such as the problem of the novel, animal treatment, humanism, the problem of evil leading to the issues about feminist and post-colonial criticism. Her meeting with Egudu and Joseph gives the illustration about African culture and the Western superiority. It also illustrates the struggle of the Africans in opposition towards Western superiority. The forms of the struggle are presented in the characters of the novel. Since Costello shows many ideas, the study will be focused on the superiority of the Westerns over African culture and the struggle against it in the eyes of postcolonial criticism. Edward Said's Orientalism will be applied in order to analyze the struggle against the Western superiority, and it is supported by Ashcroft's The Empire Writes Back.
