Abstract

Maharani, Betty. The Underlying Condition and situation in the Obeying and Infringing of Conversational Maxims in Children between 4 and 5 years old within adult-children conversation. A thesis submitted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Sarjana Degree of the English Depatment, Faculty of Airlangga University. This study focuses on analyzing whether children between 4 and 5 years old apply the conversational maxims proposed by Paul Grice not. The maxims of Conversational Principe formulate a better way of speaking in order to be understandable. Moreover, the writer tries to find out in what condition or situation that influence the children to infringe the maxims. Sometimes people flout the maxims inevitably for some certain reasons, for instance, people sometimes answer a question by giving ambiguous statement and say something which is not related to the topic talked. Considering that children between 4 and 5 years old have imperfect command of the language, the writer found that children with no intention of deceiving, fails to observe the maxims. This thesis studies the responds of the children for each question that the writer gave then tries to reveal the underlying aim and situation that influence the children in infringing the maxims of conversational principles
