Abstract

This study attempts to discuss of how the story of the murder case in The Name of The Rose written by Umberto Eco, is narrated. William of Baskerville and Adso of Melk who play as the protagonists in the case will be the main subject for the writer’s analysis because the conflict would not work if the character did not exist. The protagonist’s investigation of the murder case is somehow found various features; therefore the writer of the study will discuss more about Eco’s way of narration between the protagonists and the murder case as the main conflict. The writer of the study will use narratological model proposed by Gérard Genette who split the narrative categories into three elements, Tense, Mood, and Order. It is important that these elements is used in order to analyze the elements of narrative discourse and his contribution to the character compositions of the protagonists; Adso of Melk and William of Baskerville, in revealing the case in hand at the end of the story. As A result, the analysis of narrative structures in The Name of The Rose has been realized that the novel has fulfilled the function of narrative strategies by Gérard Genette to observe how the murder case is narrated. In the heading of narrative strategies, Genette’s theory illuminates the process of murder case investigation by the protagonist in The Name of The Rose.
