Abstract

This study is about the effectiveness of using games to teach English vocabulary to young learners. In Indonesia, English is important and needed to be taught at school. Nowadays, English is taught not only in High School but also in Elementary School. Therefore, there are many techniques to be used to teach English, including teaching vocabulary. This study aims to show that using games is effective to teach English vocabulary to elementary students. The sample of the data was the second grade students (II-A and II-B) of SDN Manukan Wetan I / 114 Surabaya that consist of 64 students, who are divided into two groups, control and experimental group. In collecting the data, both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test. The data then were analyzed using SPSS 15.0. In order to know whether the differences between the two means were significant or not, 2 independent sample t-tests were applied. Based on the statistical analysis, it can be seen that the mean of the post-test score of the experimental group was higher than the mean score of the control group. The finding showed that the difference of the post test scores between the control and the experimental group was significant. The experimental group performed better than the control group because the significant score (2 tailed) of 2 independent sample t-test of post test where the significance result was 0.003 (0.3 %) was less than the α value 0.05 (5 %). The mean of the post test score of the experimental group was statistically higher than the control group, so null hypothesis was rejected. The writer concluded that teaching English vocabulary by using games was more effective than without games to young learners. Therefore, the use of games is useful for teaching English vocabulary to young learners.
