Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country in which its people usually have darker skin compared to the people in the west and some parts of Asia. However, in reality whiteness or having white skin is widely circulated through media, always related to women’s beauty and desirable among Indonesian, especially female. In some previous studies, it is known that whiteness or having white skin is considered as an important element in constructing female beauty in Asian cultures including Indonesia therefore, this study would like to discover if female university students perceive white skin as an important part of beauty and what factors that shape their perception. This study is a qualitative research. Theory of perception is used as theoretical lens. In addition, this study is held in two universities in Surabaya. It is participated by 15 female university students. In the technique of data collection, the writer uses interview and in the technique of data analysis, interpretative analysis is used. Finally, this study discovers that there are negotiations among female university students in perceiving white skin as an important part of beauty. The results of their negotiations, first is their ambivalent perceptions in perceiving white skin as an important part of beauty in which they accept it yet on the other side they refuse it. Second, the result of their negotiations is the change of their ideal white skin. Beside the perception of white skin as an important part of beauty it is known that white skin is also perceived as the marker of woman’s class social identity and woman’s femininity.
