Abstract

This article is aimed to describe the phenomenon of phonological operation which occurred during the reading activity of a dyslexic 11-years-old child. In this study, the researcher is going to find out the phonological operation of the deviances produced by the participant during the reading activity and to find out the pattern of the operation. In analyzing the phenomenon, the researcher uses the categories of Phonological Operation proposed by Mike Davenport and S.J. Hannahs (1998). In conducting the research, the researcher uses the Qualitative Method which thoroughly describing the phenomenon. In collecting data, the participant is asked to read the twelve texts loudly in order to find the deviances. The period of data collection is 4 weeks. And the method of data collection is managed in such a way to create a condition as natural as possible. The result shows that from the 5 categories of Phonological Operation proposed by Davenport and Hannahs, there are only four of them that cover the deviances which the participant produced. Those categories are insertion, deletion, feature changing, and metathesis. The result shows that the participant always inserts certain phoneme in certain phoneme combination. The participant always deletes certain phoneme in phoneme combination. The participant changes the feature of certain phonemes which result the production of another phoneme. The participant also re-arrange the order of consonants and vowel in certain words such as words with 2 consonant clusters, therefore it result the production of different word from the original. The dominant pattern of the operation occurred is the insertion, deletion and feature changing which involve the phoneme /g/ and /ŋ/.
