Abstract

The tragedy of 9/11 is one of the most influential reasons that has instigated stereotypes on Muslim community. This research examines the practice and struggle against the stereotype of ‘Muslim is a Terrorist’ attached to the Indian Muslim immigrants in My Name is Khan the movie through the character of Rizvan Khan. The purposes of this study are to investigate the practice of stereotype and how it is contested. The real character of the Indian Muslim immigrant has been reduced because of his religion inferiority identity. The method used in doing this analysis is qualitative. The applied theory is stereotype by Stuart Hall. The main character in the movie, Rizvan Khan, is attached to the stereotype as untrustworthy, aggressive and violent toward other religious communities, and the cause of destruction. In order to give the balance of the stereotypes, the analysis provides positive images of Indian Muslim immigrants. In reversing the stereotype, Rizvan Khan is presented as a caring, loving, tolerant, and open-minded person. While from the non-narrative aspects, the writer analyzes the shot, the angle, camera movement, and costume to support the analysis. As a result, the writer discovers that the stereotype of ‘Muslim is a terrorist’ which is attached to the Indian Muslim immigrant character is not appropriate. The images show that the Indian Muslim immigrant character also has the positive quality as of the Non-Muslims.
