Abstract

In Japan, a term youkai refers to some spooky phenomenon or supernatural scary creatures. But it has different depictions in anime series. How animators adapt youkai in their animation have some different depictions, through appearance and personality, from youkai in Japanese folklore. This research addresses to analyze the comparison of appearance and personality depictions between youkai of the folklore and youkai character in anime, and what factor lays that cause those differences. The research method used in this research is literature review and data analysis. The theory used in this research is the concept of folklore, thus folktale, myth, and legend-based youkai descriptions. Writer found that some of the youkai characters in anime got significant different depiction from what they usually imagine in folktales, and cause of these different depictions is the factor of target audiences. Writer found it interesting how Japan’s animation studios can retell such supernatural being that used to scare people away in a popular media, and make it acceptable. Anime becomes a medium for retelling of this traditional folktale figure called youkai, re-envisions it to suit the story that animators created and current anime consumers.
