Abstract

Introduction: Mechanical force of orthodontics, would inhibit periodontal ligament vascularization and blood flow. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of many solutions which stimulates the healing process of periodontal tissue and increase the amount of new bone formation. Objective: To investigate the mechanism of HBO 2.4 ATA for 3 x 30 minutes once a day with 5 minutes interval for 7 days as adjuvant therapy to accelerated periodontal remodeling process during orthodontic tooth movement. Methods: The study was an experimental laboratories research with completely randomized design.Twenty four males Cavia cobaya were divided into three groups, (X1) as the control group, (X2) as the group with orthodontic force, (X3) as the group with orthodontic force followed by HBO 2.4 ATA. MMP-8, TGF-β , HIF-1α and OCN expressions were measured by using immunohistochemistry technique, PGO were examined by linear distance then analyzed by ANOVA followed by LSD and pathway analysis test (p < 0.05). Results: HBO 2.4 ATA for 3 x 30 minutes once a day with 5 minutes interval for 7 days increased HIF-1α , MMP-8 expressions in the pressure area, and increased TGF-β, OCN in the tension area. ANOVA test showed a significant difference in all the groups. Pathway analysis showed connection between TGF-β, OCN, PGO in the tension area and HIF-1α, MMP-8, PGO at pressure area (p<0.05). Conclusions: HBO 2.4 ATA for 3 x 30 minutes once a day for 7 with 5 minutes interval could effectively accelerate periodontal remodeling process showed by increasing HIF-1α, MMP-8 especially at pressure area and increasing TGF-β, OCN at the tension area
