Abstract

ABSTRACT. Definilions are !he pivotal parts of dictionaries. Every lexicographer always strives to write definilions which are not on(v accurate but also comprehensible lo diclio11a1J' users. Neverlbe/ess, as sbown in Ibis pape,; the deji11ilions used in the cun·ent LSP dictionaries have not been able to suit the needs of their 11sers. Therefore. ii is necessary• to create a typology of definitions for LSP dictiona1ies which can be refen·ed to ~)' lexicographers when writing definitions. 71Je (ypology is created by imple111et11ing 1he lexicographical jimction theory• which focuses on satisfying user needs. 77ie typology lakes imo account both text production and text receptionjimctions, as well as encyclopaedic and foreign /a11g11age competences of the users. The proposed typology is expected to serve as a model which can be refen·ed to by lexicographers when deciding on hou• to w1ite definitions/or ISP dictionaries in general. and ESP dictionaries in pa11icular.
