Abstract

An experimental study in human was undertaken within HBO environment to find out the influence of Vitamin E in the activity of free radicals, SOD and MDA. The research design used was Randomized One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The same subjects were organized into both HBO and HBO+ Vitamin E group, with 14 days interval in between. This study was conducted at LAKESLA (Naval Oceanology Health Institution) using 8 women, 20 � 28 years old. The sample was exposured to Hyperbaric Oxygen once daily for 10 concecutive days, at dose 2.4 ATA 100 % 02 and duration of exposure 3 x 30 minute, with 5 minute in between free air inhaling. After having exposure, blood test was performed to check the level of SOR, SOD and MDA on the day 1, 5 dan 10 in both groups. SOR examination was conducted using Lumat methode, whilst SOD and MDA examination were conducted using Spectrophotometer. The result reveals a decreased level of SOR from 227.38 + 50.33 at In day to 217.75 + 27.24 at 5th day, whilst a significant increased (p<0.05) occure from 5`h day i.e. 484.38 + 154.71 at 10`h day, in the treatment group. The result of SOD test showed that there was an improvement from 26.729 + 5.265, not significant in the treatment group. The result of MDA assay in the treatment group indicate an increased from 0.47713 + 0.045 to 0.51625 ± 0.0388 at 5a' day and continue to rise i.e. 0.57838 + 0.0648 at day 10th. Although the above result show an improvement, but compare to control group is still very low. From the analysis above, we conclude that HBO + Vit E with the pressure 2.4 ATA for 3 x 30 minute with 5 minute interval in between for free air inhaling for 10 days, could decreased MDA level significantly.
