Abstract

Work stress is one of many problems which female employees undergo in workplace. Woman as a worker in general develops some stresses both physical and nonphysical (psychological) in nature. This research studies some. factors which supposedly exert impact on the work stress and whether these factors relate to work absence of the female employees in PT. Impact Surabaya. Purpose of the research is to know some factors influencing the work stress, including physical work environment, social work environment, work factor, external factor and personality type. It is also designed to see a relationship between the work stress and absence. The research was conducted over female employees of production department of PT. Impact Surabaya making the use of cross sectional design. The sample included 60 people taken in random sampling manner. The data were analyzed using multiregression logistic test. The results showed that the physical and social work environments significantly influenced the occurrence of work stress with value of 0.027 and 0.028, respectively, that are smaller than 0.05. Risk of occurrence of the work stress among the female employees who felt being disturbed by the physical work environment were 54.2 higher and those who got highly disturbed by the same factor were 224.3 higher than those who were not disturbed. Similarly, risk of the occurrence of work stress among the female employees who felt being disturbed by social work environment were 118.6 higher than those who were not disturbed by the same factors. From results of chi square test, it appears that there is a significant relationship between the work stress and absence. This is indicated by value ofp at 0.0047 or smaller than 0.05.
