Abstract

A pterygium is a triangular-shape growth consisting of bulbar conjunctiva epithelium and hypertrophied subconjunctival connective tissue, occurring medially and laterally in the palpebral fissure and encroaching onto the cornea Objective : The research was aimed to describe and explain the expression of p53, pRb, BCL2 and E2F protein in progresive and non progresive type of pterygium by Human Papilloma virus type 18 infection. Methods : The research was analytic observasional by crossectional study design. 24 patients of pterygium since May to October was classified into progresive and non progresive pterygium. The examining of PCR was used to detect the virus of the HPV type 18 on both types of ptrygium. The pterygium which positively infected by HPV type 18,was applied imunnohistochimestry staining to see and compare the expression of pRb, BCL2 and E2F protein on both types of pterygium. Results: From our PCR examination, among 24 pterygium specimen, 21 (87,5%) were identified with HPV type 18 infection, of these, 19 samples (10 progresive and 9 non progressive pterygium) were further included in the study. The were significant difference between progressive and non progressive pterygium among indicator to be studied, namely p53 (mean 0.018995 vs 0.0041178, p= 0,007), pRb (mean 0.032243 vs 0.004964, p= 0,003), BCL2 (mean 0.01545 vs 0.003391, p= 0,001), dan E2F (mean 0.016746 vs 0.003577, p= 0,004) Conclusion: This study concludes that the expression of p53, pRb, BCL2 and E2F in a progressive pterygium was higher than non progressive pterygium. Then the progressivity of HPV type 18 infected pterygium is aggravated by increasing p53, pRb, BCL2, and E2F expression.
