Abstract

This study is intended to uncover candidates’ political dramaturgy in District Heads Election (Pilkada). The study is based on a phenomenon of campaigning, prominently showing up an image building, impression management and logical marketing. This phenomenon is deemed to strengthen mode of power production which mostly relies on bubble politics. Through campaigning and impression management, candidates are always ‘bubbled’ to be powerful and super as an attempt to attain people’s votes. However, it implies that the election process has intentionally been reduced only as a matter of advertising and performance. As a result, there is an assumption confirming that political process resembles a stage performance, showing figures with certain characters that are intentionally exposed through media and networks to create a sudden astonishment. Simply, the research questions to be answered in the present study include how the front stage and back stage of political candidates in district heads election are and how the candidates’ impression management is used to assure people to give their votes in the election. This study is conducted in Surabaya municipality East Java, by applying field research method and data collection technique: unstructured and in-depth interview. The qualitative-descriptive data analysis is done with a help of interactive method. The Interactive method includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The theoretical underpinning used in this study is as suggested by Erving Goffman, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. The findings show that direct district heads elections look like a stage performance, showing up figures with certain characters and pretension. The pretension is made up by the figures through media and networks to create a sudden astonishment. For example, they pretend to be good, aspirated, close to people, acceptable, loyal, and religious. This way is done as the candidates are willing to create a good rapport to persuade people to choose them in the election. In terms of impression management, each candidate attempts to maintain their impressions in two ways: maintaining rapports and making use of media. Maintaining the rapports is undertaken by communicating with people and important figures intensively. Meanwhile, making use of media is undertaken by exposing the candidates in the media, either through news reports or advertisements
