Abstract

Aeromonas hydrophila infections are one of the most common disease and becaming a problem in fish farming. These bacteria can infect freshwater and brackish water fish and causes a disease called "Motile Aeromonads Septicemia" (MAS). Motile aeromonads differ interspecifically and intraspecifically in their relative pathogenicity or their ability to cause disease. Generally, this research aims to observe the description of hepatocytes and kidney cells ultrastructure of nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and milkfish (Chanos chanos) infected with Aeromonas hydrophila and differences that may be present in each organ of this two fish species in the different habitat. This research results that nile tilapia injected with the Aeromonas hydrophila can be infected by the bacteria, whereas the milkfish treated with the same bacteria are not infected by the bacteria. Aermonas hydrophila infection causes damage to the ultrastructure of nile tilapia hepatocytes and kidney cells of fish. Damage is caused by virulence factors of Aeromonas hydrophila such as aerolysin that can damage host cell membranes and siderophore that play a role in iron-taking process by the bacteria from host cells. Damage that occurs in hepatocytes is more severe than in kidney cells. This is probably because the location of the liver that is closer to the fish intestine that was a major target of Aeromonas hydrophila infection, it easier for bacteria to move toward the heart. Thus, the number of bacteria that infects the liver more than that infects the kidneys
