Abstract

Unhealthy lifestyle and sedentary behavior are considered to have relationship with metabolic syndrome incidents among workers. The aim of this study was to analyze metabolic syndrome associated factors in container crane operator. The study was explored in a cross sectional study in an international container terminal facilities company in Surabaya. Age, family medical history, personality type, knowledge of metabolic syndrome, stress, eating habit, smoking habit, physical exercise habit, body mass index were analyzed as independent variables. Metabolic syndrome as dependent variable was defined according to International Diabetes Federation criteria. Overall, the study result found that metabolic syndrome prevalence was 40%. Chi square analysis showed a significant association between physical exercise habit and body mass index with metabolic syndrome. The result of binary logistic regression analysis showed that operator who had no physical exercise habit had more risk to have metabolic syndrome adjusted with obese condition and score of knowledge. Conclusion: knowledge, physical exercise habit and obesity appear to have associations with metabolic syndrome in container crane operator. Accordingly, this study suggests the company to give attention and support the program of worker’s health behaviors especially in having exercise habit and maintain to have non-obesity shape, in purpose to prevent the metabolic syndrome.
