Abstract

Background: Based on The Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey 2013, Indonesian Infant Mortality Rate and Neonatal Mortality Rate in 2012 are quite high at 32 and 19 per 1000 live births respectively. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set a target of reducing infant mortality to 23 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2015. Low Birth Weight (LBW) is one of the biggest causes of infant mortality in Indonesia. Basic Health Research nationally in 2013 showed the percentage of children aged 0-59 months with low birth weight was 10,2% . From 2013 to 2015, the percentage of low birth weight in RSU Haji Surabaya respectively amounted to 10,5%, 9%, and 11,3%. The result of preliminary study in RSU Haji Surabaya was 65% of 23 LBW cases were positive risk factors of LBW. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between pregnancy interval and low birth weight in RSU Haji Surabaya. Methods: This study was using observasional analytical method with case control design. The populations were mothers who delivered baby during 2014-2015 in RSU Haji Surabaya. Sample taken was conducted using consecutive sampling technique by comparison case:control 1:1 that met the inclusive and exclusive criterias. Total amount of sample were 120 respondents. Independent variable was pregnancy interval and dependent variable was low birth weight. Instrument in this study was data compiler sheet. Source of data was medical records. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Chi-Square. Result: Frequency of LBW infants and normal birth weight infants are 7 and 7 (pregnancy interval <2 years), 21 and 29 (pregnancy interval 2-5 years), 32 and 24 (pregnancy interval >5 years). Chi-Square test obtained p>α with p=0,215 and α=0,05 so it can be concluded that there is no relationship between pregnancy interval and low birth weight in RSU Haji Surabaya. Conclusion: The highest percentage of mothers who delivered LBW are mothers with pregnancy interval >5 years and the lowest percentage are mothers with interval pregnancy <2 years. There is no relationship between pregnancy interval and LBW.
