Abstract

English is one of the common foreign languages that is used nowadays. People use English to communicate with other people around the world who do not share the same first language. English is used in many aspects, such as in trading, entertainment, medical areas, school, and many more. Since Indonesia is one of the countries that use English as their foreign language and deal with ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which allows other citizens from ASEAN to work in Indonesia and vice versa, Indonesian people need to learn English. English can be learnt formally and informally. Both ways complete each other, yet formal way is still the priority to acquire English. To make English learning process successful, teachers take a big role in the classroom. A qualified teacher must have a good attitude, wide knowledge, good skill in communication, and ability to handle the students. The writer got an opportunity to do the internship as an English teacher in SD Bunga Bangsa Surabaya. She was very happy to get the chance because she got many new experiences in teaching there. She had to observe the class first before start teaching, prepare the lesson plan, and make many fun activities to make the students enjoy learning. She also learnt to be on time, deliver the material well, and handle the class. The writer realizes that being a teacher is not easy because it takes effort. However, teaching is still an interesting activity if people can be patient and are willing to do it. Those experiences were unforgettable for her. During the internship, the writer was helped by the subjects she has learnt in English Diploma program. She applied all the knowledge she gained to teach English to the students. The teaching subjects, such as Micro Teaching, EYL, and TEFL, that she learnt were very useful for her in making lesson plan and teaching in enjoyable ways. She was also helped by her teaching experience in courses. Based on the writer’s internship experience, the writer recommends SD Bunga Bangsa Surabaya to her junior in English Diploma Universitas Airlangga as one of the places to do the internship. That is because Bunga Bangsa School has given her many experiences that would be useful for her future. She learnt a lot not only on how to be a good teacher, but also on how to face different characteristic of students. Besides, the school is very welcoming those who want to do internship there.
