Abstract

Politeness strategies are used in order to minimize face Threatening Act (FTA). During a conversation, some acts can possibly be included as the Face Threatening Act (FTA). Every type of politeness strategies has different background in its use. Brown and Levinson also stated that there are social factors that underlie both speaker and hearers in determining the use of politeness strategies. This study is conducted to figure out the Politeness Strategies behind the utterances stated by the host in Mata Najwa talk show. The aim of this study is to find out the types of politeness strategies are used by the host in Mata Najwa talk show and to find out the types of the politeness strategies are mostly used by the host in Mata Najwa talk show. In this study, the writer picked one episode of Mata Najwa talk show to be analyzed using the theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson. The result shows that the host used politeness strategies as described by Brown and Levinson. There are 34 utterances containing politeness strategies which are divided into four categories; 3 utterances for bald on record, 26 utterances for positive politeness, 4 utterances for negative politeness, and 1 utterance for off-record. The data revealed that most of the politeness strategies used by the host in the talk show is positive politeness strategies. It indicates that she tries to minimize the distance between the host and the guests. By applying the appropriate politeness strategies, it could maintain the relationship and reduce some FTA which make the interaction run well and the participants enjoy the conversation without being infringed or threaten when they discuss about some topics.
