Abstract

Attocarp s chompedet (family Moraceae), knowtt as "cempedak", ZOIO is widcly distributcd ill Indonesia and has becn lraditional!)' uscd in malarial renrcdics. Our prc','ious sfudy rcvcalcd ahar thc cahanol extract of Artocorplts champeden stembark (EEAC) cxiribited potcnt antimalarial activitics aguinst P. falciparum in yitro and P. berghei in vivo. Therefore, it is potential to develop EEAC as an antimslarial phytopharmaceutical product. The developmcnt of phytoPharmaceutical producr requires consistency in lhc efficacy, safety, and effectivity. This rcsearch was conducied to evaluate the safcty of EEAC as an active matcrial for antimalaria phyropharmaceutical product. Toxicity test in mice atier oral administration was carricd out. Acute loxicity rcst was conducted using the highest dose of 2l g/kg body weight/day. The result showcd that EEAC was rclatively non roxic. Subacute toxicity test was exprcsscd by thc levels of ALT and AST activities in scrum. Thc result showed that EEAC was relatively safc. In addition, therc was no significant diffcrcnce in thc observed ALT and AST activities in serum. Histopathological changcs due to degcneration and nccrosis wcrc observed after 30 days oral administralion of EEAC at a dosc of 1.90 mg/20 g body wcighVdayr Thc tcratogenic test was also conducted using thc highest dose of 254.80 mg/20 g body wcight/day. The result showed that therc was no significant morphological deformity of micc fetus al organogcncsis phasc aftcr l0 days oral administration of EEAC
