Abstract

After six week worth of internship, the writer learned a lot of things from EF English FirstSidoarjo. Before having the internship, the writer thought that being a teacher was a simple matter of looking into the syllabus page and went to the class right after finding out what the lesson was about. But it turned out to bemore complicated, thorough process than what the writer thought. To be a teachermeant that one had to facilitate the students’ needs, to plan the lesson well, and to know how to engage well with fellow coworkers. There are also few recommendations the writer would like to give for the future intern who wants to have an internship at EF. Facilitate the needs of every individual seems like something impossible before. But being a teacher at EF English First, the writer learned that a teacher was not meant to deliver the lesson and leave, but they had to act as a facilitator. A facilitator meant that they had to watch over each student and treated them as an individual, not a class as whole. Because even though the teacher had the master plan and able to control the class situation, but every student was an individual. That was the fact no teacher can neglect. They had different thought, different vision, different way of learning, and could not possibly be pushed into the sole method of how a certain teacher teach. They had to dig down to their every need. That was the reason behind the existence of the Progress Report, though the writer did not have the chance to write one, as he did not handle the whole term of a course. To plan the lesson well means that a teacher could not possibly just prepare a plain lesson plan without a thorough detail on it, let alone prepare nothing at all. EF prioritizesupon the professionalism of their service and the impact the students receive. The writer experienced a day in which he felt a bit off so he just prepared the basic of a lesson plan. Turned out that everything went worse than he thought it was going to be. So, after that day, the writer tended to prepare the lesson plan, backup plan, and supplementary materials wholly just in case things would not run well. The writer had this thought after he experienced a small talk with the DoS regarding lesson planning. He once stated “being a teacher is not just walking right into the classroom without knowing what you are going to do. Prepare first, do it thoroughly, and always has something in your pocket.” This means that even before teaching, a teacher has to plan their lesson plan well. Even though the teacher’s main responsibility in handling students, but they also had coworkers at a workplace. So, they were meant to be able to communicate and interact well with others. The writer’s first day felt like the most awkward moment he ever encountered. As he entered a whole new society with no one he knew. But things got better when the writer started to interact, to communicate, and to respect the staffs and teachers there. There could be no reason for someone to be respected if they would not respect others. So, the writer always tried his best to compliment and listen when others speak. This did not mean that he was just pretending to, but he was just wanted to be respected as well. The writer experienced a lot of unfortunate events that could be prevented if only he had the courage to ask others. So, he thought that the key leading towards success was a good communication. There are also few recommendations for future intern who is willing to propose an internship to EF English First. The company hires professional teachers and Course Consultant, so asking for opinion and help during the internship would be greatly advised, though not in an excessive amount that would disturb them. The teachers and staffs are professionals with professional goal and aims. So, being skillful in English is a must. The future intern should also be well aware that EF tolerates latecomers badly. As we are working alongside native speakers, coming right in time is also highly recommended. Another suggestion is, to be prepared for the difference in regulations the future intern would face in different branches. As the writer experienced, one branch had different rules in treating an intern over another. So the future intern should not look back and think of why the regulation is different than what was previously given to their senior. Overall, the writer experienced many challenging and intriguing moments during his internship. The writer finally realized how hard it is to be a teacher and how demanding the job really is. For the future the writer hoped that he can be a better individual, be better in applying English, and most likely be a better teacher.
