Abstract

This study aims to reveal woman’s struggle against patriarchal system in the society portrayed in I am Malala memoir written by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb in 2013. This study focuses on Malala’s character in facing patriarchal system in her society. The ideas of patriarchal system portray women as powerless, irrational, and submissive. However, in some condition, women aim to struggle against this oppression through feminist movement. One of the term is liberal feminism theory which emphasize an independent woman. The theory is proposed by Mary Wollstonecraft. This study reveals the portrayal of Malala as an extra-ordinary woman in her society. Malala is an assertive, courageous, and independent woman. From this case, arise other issues which are related to the relation between the term independent itself and the way women struggle against the patriarchal system. Therefore, this study aims to discover the portrayal of independent woman depicted in the memoir I Am Malala. This study was done using qualitative method which focuses on the primary and secondary sources. The primary source comes from the memoir of Malala, while secondary sources come from the article journal, encyclopedia, and document from website. The finding of this study shows that Malala is an independent woman who can struggle against the oppression in her society through her speech.
