Abstract

Microencapsulation is a process to entrap the active substances within matrix that protects it from extreme condition. Microencapsulation can obtain a targeted release system. Microencapsulation keeps the probiotics active through the gastrointestinal tract and releases them to the target organ. Bifidobacterium bifidum was made into microparticle by spray drying method with 0,5%, 1,0%, and 1,5% of Eudragit® S 100 concentrations. Physical characteristics and release test were performed in all formula. The result showed that the particle size of microparticle increased from formula I to formula III. Morphology of microparticle in formula I had porous, but Formula II and III had spherical shape. Moisture content decreased from formula I to formula III. Release test in all formula was performed in two different conditions to know the release of Bifidobacterium bifidum in simulated gastric fluid (pH 1,2) and simulated intestine fluid (pH 6,8). The result showed that there was no release of probiotic from all formula in simulated gastric fluid. But in simulated intestine fluid, the increasing of Eudragit® S 100 content decreased the releasing efficiency of Bifidobacterium bifidum in microparticle probiotic. Releasing efficiency data was analyzed using One Way ANOVA, the result showed that the value of p > 0,05. So, it can be concluded that there was no significant differences among the three formulas in releasing efficiency.
