Abstract

Currently, it is important to develop delivery system for topical route that controlled the release of drug into the epidermis, to make sure that the drug remains primarily localized and does not enter unnecessarily into the systemic circulation. Alginate-gelatin microspheres could be develop for controlling release of topical agents. In addition, the microspheres also has a small size and a spherical shape so comfortable when applied to the skin. Alginate-gelatin microspheres were prepared by ionotrophic gelation using aerosolization technique with calcium chloride as cross-linker. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of CaCl2 as cross-linker on characteristics of alginate-gelatin microspheres in term of yield, moisture content, morphology, particle size, and swelling ability. The result showed that alginate-gelatin microspheres had spherical shape. Increasing concentration of CaCl2 from 0.5M to 1.5M, increased size of microspheres particle from 2.82 μm to 3.90 μm. The highest yield was obtained in the microspheres formula with level of CaCl2 1.0 M. The swelling ability decreases with increasing concentration of CaCl2. Whereas, the difference of CaCl2 concentration has no effect on organoleptis, moisture content, and morphology of alginate-gelatin microspheres.
