Abstract

Introduction: Cancer is being the chronic disease that put up 7.6 million of mortality around the world and 347.792 mortality in Indonesia. The long period of cancer treatment needs a family’s role or patients companion’s role to give an impact to patient’s motivation and life expectancy. A good knowledge, a positive attitude, and a constructive coping mechanism are the main factors to make a good companion’s support This research aimed to know the impact of experiential learning method to the knowledge, attitude, and coping mechanism of cancer patient’s companion. Method: This research’s design was a pre-experimental research using one group pre-post test. The independent variable was experiential learning method. The dependent variable were the knowledge, attitude, and coping mechanism of cancer patient’s companion. The population was the cancer patient’s companions at East Java Branch of Indonesian Cancer Foundation. Sampling technique was purposive sampling as nonprobability sampling. Samples taken was 27 person. Analysis: Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with significancy <0.05. Result: Significancy of knowledge was 0.000, attitude was 0.012, and coping mechanism was 0.109. These showed that experiential learning method increase the knowledge and attitude. Discussion: It is suggested for the patient’s companion to increase the support factors to themselves in order to support the cancer patient into a successful treatment.
