Abstract

ln the use of antibacterial drug clinically, sensitive bacteria will killed while resistant bacteria will survive and replicate. Several strains of Staphylococcus have been resistant to antibiotics, e.g. methicillin. the resistance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylocoeus aureus (MRSA) is due to the presence of mecA gene. This gene may be freely distributed among staphylocccus species. Ihe rapid spreading of antibiotic resistance urged people to find active antibacteial compound. Basil (Ocimum sanctum) contains eugenol, llavonoids, saponins, and tannins known to have antibacteial effects. Methods: This was an observational laboratory study. To control the method of diffuusion susceplibility test, was used 30 mcg linezolid disk that was applied on Mueller Hinton agar inoculated with MRSA as positive control and DMSO 40% that was used to dilute basil leaves extract as negative control. Basil leaves extract with concentration of lOO mq ml',200 mg ml', 400 mg ml1. 800 mg ml. and 1600 mg ml was applied with diffusion method to determine antibacterial effects of basil leaves extract against MRSA. It was replicated 6 times. Results This study showed that the antibacteriar effect of basil (Ocimum sanctum) leaves extract can be identified at the concentration of 1600 mg m1, by laboratory disk diffusion method From the obsevations, inhibilion zone was show, al concentration of 1600 mg ml . Qualitatively it's known that basil (Ocimum sanclum) leaves extract has an antibacterial effect against MRSA. Conclusion: Basil (Ocimum sanctum) leaves extract has the effect of inhibiting the growth of MRSA al a concentration ol 1600 mg ml
