Abstract

Otot merupakan jaringan yang terdiri atas unit kontraktil mikroskopis, disebut sarkomer. Sarkomer memiliki sifat elastis, cenderung untuk kembali ke ukuran semula. Kemampuan sarkomer untuk kembali ke ukuran semula ditunjang oleh gaya otot (recoil force). “Recoil, re-coil” bermakna kembali memampat (ke ukuran semula). Gaya recoil menyebabkan otot lebih cenderung memendek dari pada memanjang. Setiap upaya untuk menambah panjang ukuran sarkomer akan direspon oleh gaya recoil untuk kembali ke ukuran semula. Respon sarkomer untuk selalu kembali ke ukuran semula disebut dengan kontraksi otot (Faulkner, 2003). Analogi otot bekerja, mirip dengan pegas (coil) bekerja menghasilkan gaya pegas. Besar gaya pegas adalah hasil kali konstanta elastisitas pegas dengan selisih panjang dari ukuran pegas setelah diregang. Konstanta elastisitas pegas dipengaruhi oleh jumlah kumparan pada pegas. Semakin banyak jumlah kumparan pada pegas dan semakin besar selilsih panjang pegas setelah diregang akan menghasilkan gaya yang semakin besar (Cameron, 1993).
