Abstract

Superhero characters are a pop culture phenomenon. Many blockbuster movies are based on superhero from comic books including Super Black. This study analyses the Super Black archetype in Nick Fury’s character, one of the significant Super Black in Marvel Universe (Earth-616). In fact, the character of Nick Fury has experienced racial switcheroo, where white superhero shifted into Super Black, which makes the study more interesting to investigate. This qualitative study used narrative - non narrative method and The Avengers (2012) as the main source of this study to reveal three important characteristics of Super Black proposed by Adilifu Nama, an expert in African American studies. The characteristics used in this study are the American ideals of Super Black as the a symbolic extension of America’s shifting political ethos and racial landscape, Super Black expresses powerful visuals, compelling narratives, and multiple meanings around a range of racial ideas and beliefs circulating in American culture, and Super Black symbolizes social discourse and accepted wisdom concerning notions of what is racially right in America. The result of this study showed that Nick Fury can be a leader figure in the Avengers, among other superheroes, supported by his intelligence, capability and experience in the battlefield even he is black from the characteristic proposed by Adilifu Nama.
