Abstract

The aims of this study are to discover the flouting maxims in the conversation and also to reveal the implied meaning of flouting maxims appears in Tetangga Masa Gitu situation comedy by using Grice’s Cooperative Principle and Conversational Implicature theories. In obtaining the data, the writer downloaded an episode of Tetangga Masa Gitu Season 2 - Episode 180 - Reuni (Ariel) and then transcribed the conversation into written form. In analyzing the data, the writer applied qualitative approach. First, the writer identified the maxims found in the data based on Grice’ Cooperative Principle. Then, the writer categorized the flouting maxims whether it is flouting maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of manner, or maxim of relation. Next, the writer analyzed those flouting maxims and the last the writer interpreted the unsaid meaning in the utterances by using Conversational Implicature theory by Grice. Then, the results of the study are flouting maxim of relation reaches 39.5%, flouting maxim of quantity and quality reach 21%, and flouting maxim of manner reaches 18.4%. Then the characters produce implied meaning in Tetangga Masa Gitu situation comedy such as to make teasing, express their feeling, and to make humor. The result shows that the characters often flout maxim of relation and most of them purpose in flouting maxim is for creating humorous situation.
