Abstract

Addiction to online games can lead to disadvantageous consequences. Especially to adolescents. One of the causal factors was parenting styles. This research aimed to analyze the relationship between parenting styles and online games addiction. Design of this research was correlation descriptive. Sample size was determined by purposive sampling, Samples were 24 adolescents who like to play online games enrolled according to the inclusion criteria. Independent variable in this research was parenting styles and the dependent variable was online games addiction. The data was collected using Parental Authority Questionnaire and Internet Addiction Test. Data were analyzed by Spearman’s rho with level of significance α < 0,05. The statistical test revealed indicating severe correlation between parenting styles and online games addiction (p = 0,01, and r = 0,804) There were 3 types of parenting styles: Authoritarian parenting style, permissive parenting style, and democrative parenting style. Among the authoritarian, permissive, and democrative parenting style, more children addicted to online games getting authoritarian parenting style. Online games addiction is not only caused by parenting styles; therefore further study about online games addiction are still necessary needed.
