Abstract

This article attempts to discuss the desire for having a true friend in the main character in a young adult novel entitled The Moonlight Dreamers by Siobhan Curham. The novel presents the importance to have friends in order to achieve mutual dreams and support each other. The Moonlight Dreamers text was analyzed using New Criticism theory proposed by Rene Wellek. The writer uses qualitative descriptive method with bottom up pattern. In the process, the writer analyzes formal elements in text such as characters, plots, symbols and irony to achieve the theme and reach the organic unity. The result of the analysis shows that the text contains didacticism or educational value to young adult related to the friendship experienced by Amber. The writer finds that friendship is very important for children in pursuing a better life.
