Abstract

Although they have lived in Indonesia for a very long time, Chinese- Indonesians still have to face dilemmatic problem with the native Indonesians (pribumi), especially regarding the matter of identity and stereotypes. As a prominent figure representing Chinese Indonesian, ‘Ahok’ has brought controversies that trigger tension between Cina and pribumi, as appears in media nowadays. This study aims at finding the discourse of Chinese Indonesian in Kick Andy Show “Mr. Governor” and “Kontroversi Ahok”. The concept of ethnicity, ethnic identity, and discourse are used as the underlying theories; also Wodak’s CDA-historical approach is used considering the relation of text to its historical context that focuses not only on linguistics aspect of the show but also relate the use of language to sociopolitical and historical context of Chinese Indonesians. The analysis is divided into four aspects. Firstly, the show is analyzed using five discursive strategies. Secondly, the author examines the intertextual and interdiscursive relationship between text (Kick Andy’s show transcript), and other texts with similar issue. Thirdly, the text is related to its extralinguistics or ‘context of situation’. Lastly, the text is related to its sociopolitical and historical context of Chinese-Indonesian discourse. From the analysis using discursive strategies, it was found that Ahok as a Chinese-Indonesian is internalized with negative notion about being a Chinese through discriminatory acts, as implied from his utterances asserting the position of Chinese-Indonesian as ethnic minority who gets used to the act of discrimination. This discourse does not happen in vacuum, since it is related with other discourses about Chinese- Indonesians, including the issue of identity in which Chinese is perceived as ‘the other’, the discourse of Chinese as ‘problem’, Chinese political participation as unusual phenomenon, and Chinese who are known as ‘economic animal’. In terms of historical and sociopolitical context, discourse of Chinese-Indonesian in the context of Ahok as a ‘discriminated minority’ is resulted from and constructed by sociopolitical contexts as well as series of historical events.
