Abstract

Adherence can be described as an extent to which the patient’s behavior matches agreed recommendations from the prescriber. Long-term treatment such as in hypertension therapy can lead to non adherence, which can cause treatment failure and incidence of complications. Thus non adherence will exacerbate health conditions, increase incidence of illness in hospitals, and increase health costs. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of medication days supply on patient adherence and cost of hypertensive patient at Community Health Centers in South Surabaya. This study was a cross sectional study using accidental sampling. Data was obtained using survey method with ARMS questionnaire, semistructured interview with guideline, and direct observation. The data was evaluated using Spearman correlation analysis. The results showed that medication days supply significantly influence patient adherence (p<0.05), but number of days drug given was not significantly influence the total cost. The higher medication days supply, the higher patient adherence in medication refill and use.
