Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the chronic diseases that require continuous and long-term therapy, thus patients need to visit Puskesmas several times. However, the number of days given by the Puskesmas are approximately 5-10 days. It can reduce patient’s adherence and increase cost for patient. The objective in this reseatch to know the effect of number of days on prescription refill toward medication adherence and cost in DM patient at Primary Health Care Centre in Surabaya. The method used in this study to measure adherence and cost was self-report with Adherence to Refill Medication Scale (ARMS) questionnaire and interview question regarding cost incurred in one month. Cost obtained including direct medical cost, direct non-medical cost and indirect cost. In this study, 73 patients who met inclusion criteria were obtained from 8 Puskesmas at Central Surabaya as samples from February to May 2017. The result of ARMS questionnaire indicated that the mean ARMS score was 14,77 ± 3,699 with 12 to 36 as the total score of the respondents respectively while the result of the cost interview showed that indirect cost was the biggest cost of all the other cost. Based on the result analyzed, it was found that the number of days in prescribed drugs administration affects the adherence and cost.
