Abstract

Acne Vulgaris (AV) is a chronic and obstructive inflammatory skin disease of the pilosebaceous unit. Testosterone is a main androgen hormone which have a role in the pathogenesis of AV. Past researches have shown controversial results regarding serum testosterone levels in AV. Purpose: To know the association of serum testosterone levels with varying severity of AV in women over 25 years of aged in dermato-venereology outpatient clinic in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya. Method: This is an analitic observational case control research, with 37 patients from dermatovenereology outpatient clinic Dr.Soetomo hospital, based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Mean serum testosterone in mild AV group was 39.16 + 24.18μg/dL, moderate AV group was 39.75 + 23.75 μg/dL, and severe AV group was 52.46 + 24.00 μg/dL. These results indicate levels of serum testosterone in severe AV group higher than moderate and mild AV groups. But there was no statistically significant correlation between serum testosterone levels and the severity of AV, whereas AV has multiple precipitating factors. Conclusions: Serum testosterone levels in patients with severe AV was higher than medium and mild AV but showed no correlation with AV grade in women aged over 25 years. Further research is needed to rule out confounding factors to find out more of hormonal role in the pathogenesis of AV.
