Abstract

Marsilea crenata Presl. is an aquatic plant in Indonesia that has been used as vegetable in a local food of Surabaya. Research has been conducted to study its antiosteoporotic activity in trabecular bone. Using immunoassay radio (RIA) technique, 96% ethanol extract of M. crenata leaves were detected their estradiol-like chemical compounds, and therefore considered as phytoestrogen compounds. Ethanol extract of M. crenata leaves combine with axial weight-bearing exercise in mice showed its antiosteoporotic activity. The aim of this research was to study the antiosteoporotic activity of ethyl acetate fraction of M. crenata leaves in osteoporotic female mice strain BaIb-C models. Osteoporosis was induced using dexamethazone. All mice were divided into 5 groups, namely the positive control group, negative control group, ethyl acetate fractions dose 0,23 mg/20 g mice (U1), 0,46 mg/20 g mice (U2) and 0,92 mg/20 g mice (U3). The fractions were given orally for 28 days. Alendronate was given as the positive control. Average femur bone thickness of mice in the the positive control group was 35,99 ± 5,93 μm; negative control group was 22,08 ± 5,85 μm; U1 = 28,33 ± 2,30 μm; U2 = 31,34 ± 5,40 μm; U3 = 45,75 ± 4,78 μm. The result were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and showed negative control group were significantly different (p<0,05) compared to U2 and U3 group. This indicates that ethyl acetate fractions of M. crenata leaves had antiosteoporotic activity to increased the trabecular bone density of femur of female mice.
