Abstract

Stainless Steel orthodontic brackets can release metal ions into the oral cavity. Fluoridated mouthwashes are often recommended to orthodontic patients to reduce the risk of white-spot lesions around their brackets. However, information regarding the effect of fluoride countaining mouthwashes in the ion release of nickel dan chromium Stainless Steel brackets are not available. Objective : To test hypothesis that there are significance differentces in the amount of Ni and Cr ion release when kept in fluoridated mouthwash and nonfluoridated mouthwash for 12 and 24 days. Materials and Methods : 24 sets Stainless Steel brackets consisting of AO and Protect were divided into two equal group and immersed in fluoridated mouthwash and non-fluoridated mouthwash. Monitorings of Ni and Cr ion release for 12 and 24 days and were measured with an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP). Element composition of bracket were analized by Energy Dispresive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX). For statistical analysis independent t-test and paired t-test were used. Results : ICP analysis showed that ion release of Ni and Cr in fluoridated mouthwash was significantly higer than non-fluoridated mouthwash for AO and Protect. Ion release of Ni and Cr greates in AO immersed in fluoridated mouthwash in 24 days, whereas Ion release of Cr greates in Protect immersed in fluoridated mouthwash in 24 days. Element composision of brackets using EDX showed that content of Ni dan Cr on bracket immersed fluoridated mouthwash smaller than bracket immersed non-fluoridated mouthwash. Conclusion : Mouthwashes countaining fluoride should not be given for orthodontic patient, especially for patient who have Ni and Cr allergy reaction
