Abstract

Introduction: Giving chemotherapy may created risk of exposure to health workers including nurses, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) properly to protect themselves. This study aimed to identify and analyze the correlation between age, education, length of service (working period), knowledge, attitudes, tool’s availability, tool’s affordability and monitoring the compliance of nurses in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when giving chemotherapy drugs in Dr. Soetomo hospital. Methods: This research method was descriptive analytic with cross sectional approach. The population in this study were nurses who give chemotherapy treatment. The sample of 53 people by using total sampling technique. Data retrieved using questionnaires and observation sheets as a measuring tool, while data analysis using correlation Spearman rank test. Result: The results showed that factors associated with the nurse’s compliance in the use of PPE were attitude with p value = 0,030, tool’s availability with a value of p = 0,000, tool’s affordability p = 0,004 and supervision with p value = 0,000. The factors which were not related with compliance were knowledge with a value of p = 0,470, age with value of p = 0,322, education with p = 0,328 and working period factor with a value of p = 0,642. Discussion and conclution: It is concluded that the level of compliance of nurses in the use of PPE when giving chemotherapy drugs is still low, so the researhers advise nurses should increase compliance on chemotherapy delivery in order to increase their safety in work. Suggestions for the hospital to pay more attention to the availability of PPE, increasing affordability of devices and increasing supervision of PPE.
