Abstract

Background: In 2012, diarrhea is the main cause of death of infants in Indonesia (31.4%), followed by acuter respiratory infection (28%). Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in East Java from 2009 to 2014 showed that the incidence of diarrhea in infants are likely to increase, in which it reached 411 per 1000 population in 2012. The survey also showed that the incidence of acute respiratory infection are likely to increase, and in 2014 it reached 34,33%. Riskesdas survey in 2013 showed that only 39% of infants under the 6 months get exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia. Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the association between exclusive breastfeeding in 6-9 month infants with acute diarrhea and acute respiratory infection at Puskesmas Wiyung. Methods: Cross sectional study. The subject calculated with Total Sampling is 100 infants. The data was analyzed with Chi-square test statistic. Results: The result showed that there are 43,2% infants with exclusive breastfeeding and 56,8% not exclusively breastfeeding. Bivariate analysis from Chi-square test showed the association between exclusive breastfeeding and acute diarrhea (p value=0,000 OR=0,14 CI=0,06–0,35) and the association between exclusive breastfeeding and acute respiratory infection (p value=0,000 OR=0,05 CI=0,01–0,37). Conclusion: There is significant association between exclusive breastfeeding in infants aged 6-9 months with acute diarrhea and acute respiratory infection.
