Abstract

Background: Hypocalcemia may accompany children infected with the dengue virus. Hypocalcaemia is common in uncompensated shock conditions. There is lack of information about hypocalcemia among pediatric patient dengue infection in Indonesia even in the world Objective: Aiming of this study is to describe prevalence of hypocalcemia in dengue virus infection among pediatric patients in 2014 in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya. Methods: A retrospective research with cross-sectional method of hypocalcemia in dengue infection in pediatric patients’ medical record at medical record center in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya in the year of 2014. Results: The prevalence of hypocalcemia in 2014 was found in 54 cases (42.18%) out of 74 cases examined calcium levels. Hypocalcemia in female children more prevalent than male children (62.96%). Hypocalcemia is common in the age group of children (75.92%) and is common found on the 6th day (6.07 ± 1.768). Hypocalcemia was obtained in pediatric patients diagnosed with grade 3 dengue fever (42.59%). Hypoalbuminemia is commonly accompanied by pediatric patients infected with dengue virus with hypocalcemia (42.59%). In patients with hypocalcemia, almost all of them have thrombocytopenia (99%). Five pediatric patients with dengue virus with hypocalcemia had died (9.259%). Conclusion: Hypocalcemia is common in girls, the age group of children, on day six of fever, in grade 3 grade fever and is often accompanied by hypoalbuminemia
