Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive andlife threatening lung disease. According to Global Burden of Disease, in 2016 the rate of COPD patient in the world reached 251 million people (WHO, 2017). Combination treatment with inhaled corticosteroid and LABA is effective in improving lung function, health status, and reducing exacerbation (GOLD, 2017) but the use of corticosteroid in COPD patient was linked to the increasing risk of pneumonia (Singh and Loke, 2010) Objective: This study aims to determine the prevalence rate of pneumonia in COPDpatients taking inhaled corticosteroid in Asthma/COPD Clinics Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from 2015-2016 Methods: This is an observational research with a cross-sectional design. The samplewas taken from the electronic medical record database accessed from Asthma/COPD clinic and Information and Technology Unit Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya with total sampling method of COPD patients in 2015-2016 period. Results: From this study, it was found that COPD was dominated by male (81,13%).Mean for age was 65,54 (SD 9,92) with the largest age group 65-74 (32,20%). Mean for Body Mass Index was 21,83 (SD 4,99) with the largest BMI category group normal (57,63%). The majority of patients were inhaled corticosteroid user (89,83%) with the domination of budesonide/formoterol user (73,58%). The prevalence of pneumonia in the inhaled corticosteroid user was 5,6% with prevalence ratio 0,34 (CI 95% 0,04-2,77) which was not significant. The prevalence ratio in budesonide/formoterol compared to fluticasone/salmeterol was 0,92 (CI 95% 0,84- 1,01) which was not significant.
