Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of metabolic disorders with higher prevalence and incidence each year. Diabetics could not produce insulin in significant amount. It makes diabetics body in hyperglycemic state. Moreover, diabetics loose body weights significantly due to cell’s hypoglycaemia. Turmeric is very popular in the world as a traditional drug to treat various diseases include diabetes. Turmeric has curcumin as its main active substance. Curcumin with certain dose can be an antioxidant, PARP inhibitor, and increase serum insulin level. Objective: This study is conducted to analyze the effects of turmeric extract on improving body weights and reducing high blood glucose level in diabetics. Methods: This research is separate pre-test and post-test control group design. Thirty rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighted ±105 gram are divided into 3 groups. Group K is a negative control, group D is diabetics with placebo group, while group E is diabetics with curcumin 150 mg/kgBW. Treatment is given in 14 days. Result: According to One Way ANOVA, significance value of body weights change in rats is p<0.05 that means there is a significant difference among these groups, but after LSD test there is no significant difference between group E compared to group D. Meanwhile, in Brown Forsythe test, significance value of blood glucose difference result is p>0.05 that means there is no significant difference among these groups Conclusion: Turmeric extract treatment 150 mg/kgBW during 14 days is not effective to improve body weight loss and reduce high blood glucose in diabetic rats.
