Abstract

While students are expected to be proactive in EFL classroom, students in Pesantren or Islamic Boarding School demonstrate the opposite of that expected manner. Their trait of being obedient to their teacher is manifested in their tendency to wait for teacher’s stimulation. Hence, this study focuses to discuss how the teacher initiates interaction in the teaching-learning activity by examining the type of teacher talk and the category of question produced in the English-speaking classroom of modern Pesantren MBI Amanatul Ummah. Subjects were a female English teacher and 28 female students at the female class of the eleventh grade. The research adopted qualitative approach and employed field observation through series of recordings and interviews in collecting the data. The Interactive Classroom theory as proposed by Brown (2001) is employed to analyze the data along with the FLINT (Foreign Language Interaction) Model by Moskowitz (1971) and the Questioning Strategy by Kinsella (1991) and Bloom (1956) cited in his book. The Sociocultural Dimension of Pesantren is also employed to interpret the findings. It was revealed that the kind of classroom activity defined if the teacher employed teacher-centered or student-centered learning thereby influencing the type of classroom interaction. The research also found that all but one type of teacher talk was produced with the asking questions being the most type produced. In addition, the knowledge question was the most questioning category produced. It was concluded that teacher should utter more the indirect influences type of talk and ask more easy question as the questioning strategy to initiate and maintain interaction
