Abstract

Meloxicam is a new Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) widely use in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and other bone-joint disease. In the oral route, meloxicam has a various side effect such as gastrointestinal risk, peptic ulcer and also interaction with other drug. In the topical route, meloxicam can give a specific advantages for drug delivery. Nanostructured Lipid Carrier (NLC) is the second generation of lipid nanotechnology that produced by solid lipid and liquid lipid (oil) mixture. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect in different ratio of stearic acid as a solid lipid and oleic acid as a liquid lipid on the characteristics of NLC meloxicam. In the formulation of NLC meloxicam, 3 different lipid ratios were used, including ratio of 60:40, 70:30, and 80:20. NLC were characterized for organoleptic test, pH, viscosity, particle morphology, particle size, thermal analysis, FTIR and entrapment efficiency. Research result revealed that the best characteristic NLC meloxicam was shown in first formula with lipid ratio 60:40. It caused the first formula had the largest entrapment efficiency (81,583 ± 0,651 %), smallest particle size (341,70 ± 36,84 nm) and smallest PI (0,227) that indicates particle size distribution was homogen.
