Abstract

To write a sentence, choosing the correct pattern of grammatical collocation is very important, especially, those who still learning English in the early age. This study aims to analyze the types of grammatical collocation error and to find out the most and fewest grammatical collocation error produced by the second semester students English Department, Universitas Airlangga. The method of this study was qualitative approach. This study involved 34 students’ essays of the second semester students of the English Department. Each of the essays is the same type of essay called cause and effect essay. It is confirmed that the error in producing grammatical collocation occurred. The student faced difficulties in forming the correct grammatical collocation proven in high amount of errors. The writer found 129 errors in almost types of the grammatical collocation, except G7 types using Benson, Benson, & Ilson Combinatory Dictionary of English (1997). It was found that the most frequent types of grammatical collocation errors is G1 type with total 30 errors (23.25%) and the fewest is G3 type with 11 errors (7.75%). In interpretation of the data, the errors in G1 type is the most frequent. This type is the most frequent error because in Indonesian language a preposition is not often atteched to a particular noun. In addition, the translation of an English preposition is very complex. Therefore, the students often misinterpreted and used the incorrect preposition. In suggestion, the next study could find the source of the error. In addition, the lecturers could give some intensive training in writing subject about grammatical collocation.
