Abstract

The traditional gender roles constructed by the society always associates man with the superiority while woman is associated with the inferiority that later resulted in their status as the other. This notion could be the core reasons that lead to the domination exercised by the man in intimate relationship in order to exert their power and control toward the female partner. The man will be the dominating party where the woman should be able to meet the man‘s ideals, submit into their subordination and even regarded only as sexual being by the man. This also often leads to the violence acts if the ideals are failed to be fulfilled by the woman and resulted in the psychological effect such as Battered Woman Syndrome. This issue is apparent in The Girl on the Train (2016) movie where there are three women who are romantically played by the same man. The current study aims to portray how the women in this movie are subordinated and also shows how the Battered Woman Syndrome that is experienced by one of the three women could be overcome in relation with the other female characters. This writing uses the theory of Woman as Other by Simone de Beauvoir, with qualitative method using narrative and non-narrative approach to analyze the object. It is believed that the concept of sisterhood could be the tool to empower the battered women from their subordination. However, though the concept of sisterhood might empower women from their subordination, this movie also affirms that the traditional gender role is women‘s inevitable destiny.
