Abstract

This study raises about the othering problems on technological developments concerning of the occident and orient in the movie. This movie portrayed the imbalance between United States and Japan in terms of strength and technology since the end of the World War II until now. In the development of the movie, the conflicts between the American and the Japanese have many signs about the othering process and stereotypes action that are clearly shown in the movie by applying Post-colonial study which emphasizes on Orientalism theory approached by Edward Said. This study also used narrative and non-narrative elements by Corrigan and White in order to analyze this study and used qualitative data analysis as the method data of this study. This study shows hidden messages that portrayed on how the American perspective sees the Japanese as the people that has lower quality, dishonest, and irrational than the American as an occident. Afterwards, Orientalism theory by Edward Said works on the binary opposition that is portrayed in Wolverine Movie. It is not only to differentiate the American and Japanese, but also implies that western people are much better than eastern people in terms of attitude. This is what makes this research unique when the hero of America that goes to a third world country (Japan) to fight all the bad guys who are all Japanese, including against the Yakuza, one of the scariest gangster in the world.
