Abstract

Aerosol which is produced by E-Cigarette, contains reactive carbonyl and free radicals, inducing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can be seen through the MDA levels, and reduced by antioxidant activity in Solo Garlic extract through SOD enzyme activity. The aim of this study was analyzing the differences levels of MDA, SOD, and lung epithelial cell damage in four treatment groups. Twenty eight white rats were divided into four groups and three of them were exposured by ECigarette. This study showed that the highest MDA level was in the group which exposured by E-Cigarette without solo garlic extract, amount 7,179 nmol/ml. MDA levels could be decreased by giving the lowest dose of solo garlic extract to 3,715 nmol/ml. The lowest SOD level was found in group which exposured by ECigarette without solo garlic extract, amount 88,431 U/ml. SOD levels could be increased by giving the lowest dose of solo garlic extract to 93,814 U/ml. Histopathology of lung epithelial cells indicated that E-Cigarette exposure caused lung epithelial cell damage in early phase. Solo garlic extract only reduced cell damage that occurs, but could not restore lung epithelial cell condition. It can be concluded that E-cigarette exposure can increase MDA levels and decrease SOD activity. The lowest dose of solo garlic extract, can decrease MDA levels and increase SOD activity due to E-Cigarette exposure. Solo garlic extract only reduces cell damage that occurs, but can not restore lung epithelial cell to a normal state.
